 Co‑ops that can show us they have a high standard of operation and share the values of the co‑op housing movement can become a 2020 Co‑op. Here’s how it works. CHF Canada’s members have told us what matters to them in a well-run co‑op: good governance, sound management, excellent service to members and planning for a strong future. We’ve used these qualities to set five standards of operation that describe a 2020 Co‑op.
Co ops can measure their operations against the five standards. Those that set out to meet all or some of them can register with the 2020 Vision program. It’s completely voluntary of course. No co op has to become a 2020 Co‑op. But we’re betting that many will want to — co ops take pride in how well they run their affairs and in the great communities they’ve created. How your co‑op can meet each standard is outlined in the 2020 Vision guide – How to Become a 2020 Co‑op. It’s not necessary to start with any one standard in particular. In fact, we suggest that co‑ops complete a short quiz to see which standard they are closest to completing and starting from there. Look for the 2020 Self Assessment in the Tools section. You may be surprised to find your co‑op has already met a few of the standards! Here’s some good news — you don’t have to meet all of the standards all at once. The time allotted for co ops to meet all the standards is four (4) years. But a co op must meet at least one standard in each of the four years. And remember, you can always contact the 2020 Co-ordinator to help answer any questions as you work towards meeting a standard. Members that set out on the road to becoming a 2020 Co‑op can count on offering strong, stable co‑op homes for a long time to come. A 2020 Co‑op will be in better shape to deal with operating challenges ahead and find it easier to get refinancing when that becomes necessary. As you work towards becoming a 2020 Co‑op, CHF Canada will mark your progress along the way and make sure other members see the example you’re setting for them. The 2020 Vision Process The gateway for 2020 Vision is through this website. In a way, that’s the first test. The web is now such an important management tool for housing co ops that to be a 2020 Co op you really do need to be connected to the internet. But accessing the process through the internet is more than a test – it’s the best, most efficient way for CHF Canada and your co op to keep in contact as you start out to become a 2020 Co op. Here’s how it works. When you tell us you want to register, we’ll set you up with your own password-protected 2020 webpage. Your page will identify your co op and some facts about it, such as the government program that applies to you. Your co op’s webpage will set out the five 2020 standards and how you can show us that you meet them. You’ll check off each standard that you think you have met and send the 2020 Co-ordinator the information needed for confirmation. Once that’s done, we’ll add our own checkmark to yours, and that’s it — you’ve met the standard and are one step closer to being a 2020 Co op! And when you do meet all the standards, CHF Canada will recognize you as a 2020 Co op. This is a formal designation. We have reserved 2020 Vision as a registered mark for housing co ops. Only co ops that meet all five standards can use the designation. 2020 Co ops will receive official recognition of their status and be honoured in CHF Canada’s publications and at our annual meeting. Staying a 2020 Co‑op Becoming a 2020 Co‑op means you have reached a high level of excellence. To make sure that this designation continues to be an indicator of superior performance we’ll be asking each 2020 Co op to check back in with us after five years, so we can confirm that the 2020 standards are still in place |
