Question candidates about co-operative housing

Here are some questions you can ask political candidates when they knock on your door or at all-candidates’ meetings.

If elected, will you support continued federal spending for housing co-ops, to provide more homes for low-income Canadians?

Co-op members will vote for candidates that will provide permanent annual federal funding so that new affordable housing, including co-ops, can be built.

Existing co-ops need new federal investments to preserve the homes they have now and to add homes for Canadians who need them most. And some co-ops are so badly damaged by building envelope failure, or are so old, that they need to be completely redeveloped.

Will you support more rent-geared-to-income subsidies so housing co-ops can help more low-income Canadians who need housing?

When co-op agreements with the federal government expire, thousands of Canadians will be left without affordable housing. CHF Canada members have agreed that, if government subsidies for low-income households are available, up to 50% of co-op homes can be made available to low-income Canadians.

If elected, will you support a loan fund so that housing co-ops can invest in energy savings and the reduction of greenhouse gases?

Canada’s housing co-ops are leading the way in environmental sustainability. A fi ve-year, $30 million loan program will help older co-ops improve their environmental performance – saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

CHF Canada has is asking the major political parties where they stand on these issues and we will post their replies as we receive them.

Let your candidates know:  Co-op housing can help.
