2007 annual meeting

Co‑operative housing: environmentally aware, environmentally active

“I can talk to you about the economic and business reasons for paying attention to our environment – and there are lots,” guest speaker Kelly Baxter told participants at CHF Canada’s 2007 annual meeting. “But let me just ask … How many of you have children? How many of you have grandchildren?

“Well, I think that’s one BIG reason that we’re having this conversation today. We’re talking about THEIR future. Their world. Their air, their water, their health, their climate. We’d all do anything for our children. There’s nothing more important. So collectively, why wouldn’t we want to safeguard their future, to make sure that they have access to the same quality of life that we do?”

Baxter, executive director of The Natural Step Canada, congratulated housing co‑ops for deciding to be part of the solution. “You are taking action. You are leading. You are making a difference. The world needs more role models like you. You give me hope, but more importantly, you give my children hope”. During the national business meeting, CHF Canada, consulted with members about action they are taking on sustainability and ways they plan to progress.

These discussions and workshops on sustainability were just some of the highlights of the CHF Canada AGM. Members passed resolutions, elected new members to the Board of Directors, Ontario Council and Finance and Audit Committee, and honoured co‑ops and individuals who have made a difference to our movement.

And mark your calendars for next year’s annual meeting, June 12–14, 2008 in Toronto.
