2020 Vision

Michelle Maldonado of Swansea Village Housing Co‑op introduces the launch of the new 2020 Vision website and promotional video.

CHF Canada’s 2020 Vision initiative was a major theme of this year’s meeting as embodied in the question “What’s in your future?”

Participants found a wealth of tools and good advice at the 2020 Vision table. Members provided feedback on the 2020 Vision program to CHF Canada staff, and the national business meeting featured the launch of a new 2020 Vision website and an exciting new 2020 Vision video featuring a wide range of members talking about their own hopes and concerns for the future of their co‑op communities.

Fixing BC’s leaky co‑ops

CHF BC president Catherine Porter shows some of the beautifully renovated co‑ops after building envelope repairs in British Columbia.

Another highlight of the 2010 annual meeting was a progress report from British Columbia on the effort to fix leaky co‑ops. CHF BC’s president Catherine Porter and executive director Thom Armstrong showed off a long slide show of beautifully repaired co‑op homes.

Since this crisis first surfaced in the late 1990s, almost 70 co‑ops with a quarter of the co‑op units in B.C. have had to struggle with building envelope failure. About ten years ago, this problem was brought to the attention of co‑op members across the country at CHF Canada AGMs, and CHF Canada joined the fight to save these co‑ops. Now, with the help of CMHC, dozens of co‑ops have been repaired and restored.

“Your moral, financial and political support has meant everything to us,” said Catherine. “We will never forget it. And in return we will always support the efforts of co‑ops fighting long odds, no matter where they are in the country.”

Workshops, Town Halls and Webcast

The Town Hall discussion on scale in the co‑op housing sector was webcast to more than 100 members watching online from across the country.

A key part of the annual meeting is education. You’ll find handouts and notes from some of the Member Education Forum workshops and networking sessions in our Resources Centre.

This year, there were two new features to the education and networking at the annual meeting: a Green Spot series of ten workshops on sustainability and two town hall sessions on key topics, CHF Canada’s mission and vision and scale in the co‑op housing sector.

As part of a member-mandated effort to use the Internet to bring the annual meeting to members across Canada, the Town Hall on Scale was webcast live to a large online audience. The webcast video has been archived and is available for viewing as a ten-minute highlights version and a complete three-hour discussion.
