Events at CHF Canada’s 2011 AGM

Governance was the focus of CHF Canada’s 2011 AGM.

In partnership with regional federations, CHF Canada designated 2011 the “Year of Getting Governance Right” for housing co‑operatives and for the federations that serve them. The goal is to challenge and help members to raise the bar on the quality of governance and leadership in the co‑op housing sector.

Governance was a central theme of workshops at this year’s annual meeting. This included a Town Hall on Governance which reviewed and discussed survey results from CHF Canada’s Good Governance Test.

CHF Canada’s 2020 Vision initiative includes Governance as one of the five standards of a 2020 Co‑op. The national business meeting featured the launch of a new video urging co‑ops to engage in 2020 to ensure a bright future for their co‑op communities.

Young Leaders

Young people have an important role in the future of Canada’s co‑operative housing movement. This was the message sent by CHF Canada members during the AGM when delegates voted unanimously to pass two resolutions about youth leadership.

Before voting, members heard a special presentation about how to encourage more youth involvement in the governance of housing co‑ops. It included a video of young leaders speaking about the mentors who encouraged them to get involved in the sector.

Young co‑op members also attended a youth networking session earlier in the week, where they discussed how the sector could support their development as ‘emerging leaders’ — a term they chose to describe their position in the sector.

AGM Webcast and Electronic Voting expands member involvement

In another first for CHF Canada, this year’s AGM was webcast live.

For the first time, CHF Canada members from coast to coast were able to take part in their annual meeting remotely thanks to the Internet. Over a hundred members watched the webcast of the national business meeting as it took place live in St. John’s.

The webcast was a result of a 2009 member resolution calling on CHF Canada to use technology to increase member involvement. Another new online initiative in 2011 was the use of electronic voting to elect regional directors.

CHF Canada members can still watch the entire webcast, now archived online until the end of 2011.
