What is the Golden Horseshoe Housing Federation (GH-CHF)?
GH-CHF was founded under another name in 1986 to serve and represent the housing co-operatives of Hamilton. In 1994 it began to add members from the Niagara Peninsula. There are about 40 GH-CHF member co-ops – all also members of CHF Canada. GH-CHF provides a range of services for members and the general public.
How is GH-CHF run?
The Golden Horseshoe CHF is governed by a board of nine directors. The federation employs one full-time staff member.
Services
The federation's member co-operatives receive the following services as a benefit of membership:
- A newsletter
- Accommodation referrals for members of the public looking for co-operative housing
- Advocacy and support
- Co-op Cost Cutters
- Chairing of meetings
- CHIP, a banking pool for member housing co-operatives, allowing a co-operative to earn a higher rate of interest on funds that pass through its account each month
- Introductory meetings for new members of co-ops
- Resource library
- Special events
- Toll-free telephone calls to the federation
For an extra fee, the Golden Horseshoe also offers mediation, a conference, staff training and trained educators who give workshops to members on co-operative management and co-operative living.
GH-CHF takes part in the lobbying activities organized nationally by CHF Canada. A staff member represents the association at CHF Canada's Federations Committee.
