What is the Golden Horseshoe Housing Federation (GH-CHF)?

GH-CHF was founded under another name in 1986 to serve and represent the housing co‑operatives of Hamilton. In 1994 it began to add members from the Niagara Peninsula. There are about 40 GH-CHF member co‑ops – all also members of CHF Canada. GH-CHF provides a range of services for members and the general public.

How is GH-CHF run?

The Golden Horseshoe CHF is governed by a board of nine directors. The federation employs one full-time staff member.

Services

The federation's member co‑operatives receive the following services as a benefit of membership:

  • A newsletter
  • Accommodation referrals for members of the public looking for co‑operative housing
  • Advocacy and support
  • Co‑op Cost Cutters
  • Chairing of meetings
  • CHIP, a banking pool for member housing co‑operatives, allowing a co‑operative to earn a higher rate of interest on funds that pass through its account each month
  • Introductory meetings for new members of co‑ops
  • Resource library
  • Special events
  • Toll-free telephone calls to the federation

For an extra fee, the Golden Horseshoe also offers mediation, a conference, staff training and trained educators who give workshops to members on co‑operative management and co‑operative living.

GH-CHF takes part in the lobbying activities organized nationally by CHF Canada. A staff member represents the association at CHF Canada's Federations Committee.
