What is NACHA?
NACHA was founded in 1986 and serves and represents the housing co-operatives of Northern Alberta, particularly Edmonton. There are nearly 30 members of NACHA and one associate member – that are all also members of CHF Canada. NACHA provides a range of member services to about 1050 households.
How is NACHA run?
NACHA is governed by a board of nine directors who usually meet monthly. The federation employs one full-time staff member and uses the services of two others on a part-time contract basis.
Services
NACHA’s member co-operatives receive the following services as a benefit of membership:
- Advice given over the phone
- Advocacy
- Bulk-buying of flooring, paint and appliances for member co-operatives
- CHIP, a banking pool for member housing co-operatives, allowing a co-operative to earn a higher rate of interest on funds that pass through its account each month
- Co-op management and financial services through affiliate CASA Housing Services
- Liaison with regional organizations, such as the Alberta Co-op Council, Edmonton Coalition on Homelessness and the Edmonton Social Planning Council
- Newsletter
- Promotion of co-operatives to the general public
- Referrals of members of the public to co-ops with vacancies
- Referrals to legal and financial experts and tradespeople
- Resource library
For an extra fee, NACHA also provides public orientation sessions, conflict resolution, meeting facilitation, translation services, credit checks, and educational workshops on co-operative management and co-operative living. Most of the workshop presenters have completed CHF Canada’s training program.
NACHA takes an active part in local, provincial and national lobbying activities, including those co-ordinated by CHF Canada.
