What is the Southern Alberta Co‑operative Housing Association (SACHA)?

SACHA was founded in 1989 to serve and represent the housing co‑operatives of southern Alberta, particularly Calgary. There are nearly 20 SACHA members – all also members of CHF Canada. SACHA provides a range of services to members and the general public.

SACHA takes an active part in the lobbying activities organized nationally by CHF Canada. A staff member represents the association at CHF Canada’s Federations Committee.

How is SACHA run?

SACHA is governed by a board of five directors. The federation employs three part-time staff members.

Services

SACHA’s member co‑operatives receive the following services as a benefit of membership:

  • Advice given over the phone
  • Advocacy
  • Bulk-buying of office supplies
  • SACHIP, a banking pool for member housing co‑operatives, allowing a co‑operative to earn a higher rate of interest on funds that pass through its account each month
  • General public inquiries
  • Liaison with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
  • Members meetings and networking
  • Newsletter
  • Orientation sessions for the public
  • Resource materials

For an extra fee, SACHA also provides management support and consultation, bulk-buying, and educational workshops on co‑operative management and co‑operative living.
