Oakville, ON, May 24 Today's announcement of the application process for federal funding of renovation and retrofits of social housing was warmly welcomed by the Co‑operative Housing Federation of Canada.

“We take care of the buildings because we live here and we’re proud of our homes, said Richard Saunders, Vice President of Roedean Co‑operative Homes in Oakville, the site of the announcement. “And this new funding for renovations for social housing will really help us in that work.”

“CHF Canada congratulates Minister Finley and her government on this initiative. The launch of this renovation and retrofit program will help to ensure that Canada’s housing co operatives are preserved as a legacy for the long-term benefit of all Canadians,” said CHF Canada’s Executive Director Nicholas Gazzard. “It will also provide economic stimulus and achieve significant energy savings.”

Today’s announcement, by the Hon. Diane Finley, Minister Responsible for CMHC, and Terence Young, the Member of Parliament for Oakville was made at Roedean Co‑operative Homes, a 100-unit housing co‑operative in Oakville, Ontario developed in 1992.

Gazzard pointed out that Canada’s more than 1,400 federally-sponsored housing co‑ops are ready to make fast and effective use of federal stimulus funding. “Our member co‑operatives have told us that they are ready to renovate. This program will help them to make use of today’s energy efficient housing technologies, so that their future operating costs can be kept as low as possible.”

The application process announced today will be used by federally-administered housing co‑ops in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta and Prince Edward Island. In other provinces, co ops and other providers of non-profit housing are eligible for federal and provincial cost shared funding also announced in the January federal Budget.

CHF Canada is the national voice of the Canadian co‑operative housing movement. Its members include nearly 900 non-profit housing co‑operatives and other organizations across Canada. More than a quarter of a million Canadians live in housing co‑ops, in every province and territory.
