The Co-op Difference: Training in Co-op Housing Management

The Co‑op Difference is CHF Canada’s new online training program in co‑op housing management. It is designed to equip you to become a co‑op housing management specialist.

The Co‑op Difference does not duplicate the “nuts and bolts” training available in generic property management training. Instead, the program addresses the unique knowledge and skills needed by co‑op housing managers.

Taken together, the five modules in this course will enable you to put the co‑op housing movement’s principles and best practices into action. You will:

  • learn how the co‑op’s environment — the laws, government programs, and the principles embraced by the co‑op sector — affect Canada’s housing co‑ops
  • equip yourself to help a co‑op meet the Core Management Standards all Canadian housing co‑ops should meet
  • learn solid skills: how to interpret financial statements; how to use financial forecasting tools; how to stay up-to-date on legal changes
  • use scenarios and real-life examples to grapple with the thorniest issues facing co‑op managers.

The Co‑op Difference is recognized as an elective for the Institute of Housing Management’s (IHM) Property Management Certificate. You can also take the program on its own and receive a certificate from CHF Canada upon successful completion.

Each module can be purchased individually for $150 or you can purchase the entire course for $500 plus the cost of subscription to CHF Canada’s Learning Management System. You will have access to each module for two months after you finish the final exam. You must complete the entire program in one year.

Recognition of prior learning

For co‑op managers who have worked for at least three of the past five years as a co‑op housing manager, CHF Canada is offering a Prior Learning Exemption Exam. The exemption exam is offered for a $100 fee.
